The Behind The Chair Show 2017: Day 3

close formula

It’s true—you really can’t explain what it’s like to be at a Behind The Chair Show. The education is amazing, inspiration is everywhere and 3,000 hairdressers are added to our growing BTC family. And nothing showcased this better than our closing day. The morning of day 3 featured industry veterans demoing best in cutting and styling. In the afternoon, BTC show attendees experienced the first-ever CO-LAB presentation. If you missed our social media coverage, here’s everything that happened during the last day of our biggest show yet.

The Beachwaver Co.™
If you’re familiar with Sarah Potempa, inventor of The Beachwaver®, you know she is an incredible braider, updo artist and, of course, beach waver (she’s the stylist behind the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show hair, after all). So we were pumped to have her back on the BTC stage for a second year. This time around, Sarah used the Beachwaver® to recreate looks through the ages. It started with a 1920s faux bob. She then created 1940s Veronica Lake-inspired waves, a super volumized 1960s roller set, a glam 1980s “prom queen” look and modern beach waves, like the ones seen on the Victoria’s Secret runway.

Moroccanoil®
Kevin Hughes (@hairbyeleven), Robert Ham (@roberthamstylists) and the Moroccanoil® educational team dished out styling and haircutting techniques for every type of client. We got the inside look at the intricate detail that goes into creating a variety of on-trend and unique looks while keeping the integrity of your client’s hair. From cutting grungy bangs to creating feminine and wavy styles, it was ALL about the education.

amika
amika’s Global Artistic Director Naeemah LaFond took our stage for the very first time and it was cool, fun and all about the education. The Brooklyn-based braiding master and amika guest artist Edward Lampley showcased a knotted faux braid, their go-to texture technique and demonstrated how sewing can help secure your updos without using a handful of pins. Naeemah closed the show with her signature five-minute updo while the amika team passed out full-sized products and tools. “It’s been a dream come true to be here,” Nameeah shared after slaying her segment.

Co-Lab
To close the show, we did something totally different this year. In a Lollapalooza-style presentation, we brought together a group of artists—brand educators, social media influencers and celebrity stylists—who have never shared the same stage. First up was three of the best balayagers in the biz, Jamie Sea (@prettylittleombre), Ryan Weeden (@ryan.weeden) and Sadie Gray (@sadiejcre8s). Each of these balayage masters shared their unique balayage techniques and their signature formulas, while also giving away PLENTY of helpful painting tips. Topics included their preferred products and brands, favorite formulas for lightening, smudging and glossing, how to balayage on fine hair and when to insulate.

Next, in what very well could have been the best combination of hair cutters to ever take the stage together, Mary brought up Matty Conrad (@mattyconrad), Matt Swinney (@matt.swinney), Mark Bustos (@markbustos), Presley Poe (@presleypoe), Buddy Porter (@buddywporter), Joel Torres (@joeltorresstyle), Kevin Luchmun (@kevinluchmun) and Whitney Vermeer (@whitneyvermeer) to demo trending men’s and midlength cuts.
