The Behind The Chair Show 2017: Day 2

close formula

Say hello to the Behind The Chair Show DAY 2! As always, Mary kicked off Monday morning with an emotional and inspiring presentation, and gave us all the feels in the process. The day also included education from some of our industry’s hottest brands, a panel of elite celeb stylists and a solar eclipse shrouded in a rainbow…in a word? Perfect. In addition to Instagramming all day long, we created this quickie recap to catch you up on everything going down at #thebtcshow.

Mary’s Morning Inspiration: Your Vision. Your Dreams. Your Reality.
This year during Mary’s special presentation, the audience got to hear part of her inspiring journey to becoming the founder of behindthechair.com—from her early childhood, growing up a shy little girl in rural Illinois to dealing with school bullies to her incredible relationship with her father (who she brought onstage). And, as always, she shared plenty of words of wisdom with all the hairdressers in the room. “People are constantly talking about what they don’t have instead of celebrating what they do have,” she said. “And if you ever wonder if life is tough, look around you…I can promise you there would be a group of people lined up to have your life.”

L’ANZA Healing Haircare
Ammon Carver, Leah Freeman and Matt Swinney—2017 Stylist Choice Award winners for Favorite Education Team—served major take-home tips that will definitely make your life easier behind the chair. For example, Leah (fresh off her #ONESHOT win last night for Big Shot North American Creative Color Shot) recommends balayaging on wet hair for max speed and the best blur. And we loved when Ammon gave a shoutout to Matt (another #ONESHOT winner for Big Shot North American Avant Garde Shot) and Leah for always pushing him and each other to work hard at their craft.

Joico
Joico brought together haircoloring masters Vivienne Mackinder and Mark Minetti and social media stars @stylistricardosantiago, @philipring and @larisadoll for a presentation overflowing with color. So many models. So many formulas (which will all be up on behindthechair.com later this week!). So much education. First, Vivienne, Ricardo and Mark shared tips on how to complement different face shapes and use haircolor to contour. Ricardo shared his favorite rose gold formula (which he says is still his most-requested color in the salon) and Mark demoed an amazing peachy blonde. Then, Larisa and Phil shared a new color technique they’ve been working on for three months JUST for our show!

Kenra Professional
Just as the solar eclipse made its way over Austin, the Kenra Professional team took the BTC stage for their sixth year in a row. And, as one of the only teams to be with us since the beginning, they made the stage their own and hit us with bomb color tips and celeb-worthy upstyles. Laken Rose, @hairandmakeupbysteph, Cassie Siskovic and David Lopez talked the importance of products, getting creative without always having to prelighten and perfecting your styling skills.

Paul Mitchell
The Paul Mitchell team is arguably one of the most powerful education groups in the world (legend has it Vidal Sassoon once called Robert Cromeans “the best showman he’d ever seen.”) And Robert, alongside Mary Cuomo and Colin Caruso, proved once again why. While Mary shared some of her favorite coloring techniques (like the “teasy highlight”), Colin created a gorgeous balayage and a cool graffiti color. And aside from demoing jaw-dropping cuts, Robert shared some of his signature quips like, “I stopped cross-checking my work because I was so disappointed with the results” and, “If at first you do succeed, try not to look so bloody surprised.”

Pulp Riot
Pulp Riot has taken Instagram by storm—their message, products and influencers have created a brand that stylists everywhere just can’t get enough of. Making their debut on the COLOR stage, they talked through some of Instagram’s newest and hottest color techniques and then demoed a few cut and styles to show off that sweet, sweet Pulp Riot color.

And, as you probably know, the Pulp Riot team rolls deep. Here are the artists who took the stage and rocked the show today: @alexisbutterflyloft, @davidbutterflyloft, @doug_theo, @glamiris, @jaywesleyolson, @hairbykaseyoh, @rubydevine, @bottleblonde76, @hair_princess_steph, @wesdoeshair, @stephygnarstagram, @bleachedandblown and @hairbymisskellyo.

Celebrity Stylist Panel
It was our fourth annual Celebrity Stylist Panel, and Adir Abergel (@adirabergel), Sarah Potempa (@sarahpotempa), Kim Vō (@mrkimvo), Dominick Serna (@domdomhair) and Buddy Porter (@buddywporter) dished out more secrets than ever! Joined by hosts Mary Rector-Gable and Kevin Givens on the BTC stage, these five celeb stylists talked everything from tips on getting started in the celebrity styling biz to how they manage their busy agendas (Adir’s day-of Academy Awards schedule is INSANE) to the importance of social media for getting noticed.
