Applying & Coloring Extensions On Fine-Haired Clients

Extensions are not only reserved for adding length to thick-haired clients! Adding volume AND color with tape-in extensions are two services that stylists should be offering to their clients no matter the hair type. Here’s why: it ups your service ticket and can transform your client entirely (and who doesn’t LOVE a hair transformation?!).

Before you get started coloring and applying tape-ins to finer-haired clients, there are a few tricks of the trade you need to know before attempting the service. So we went to BTC Team Member @shmeggsandbaconn for her advice on creating a dope transformation using the new GL Tapes from Great Lengths! Check it all out below.

The consultation is crucial before starting the service. Maintenance and cost are the most important factors when determining who should or should not have extensions because the application is always time consuming and never cheap. 

Applying Extensions On Fine-Haired Clients

Use this helpful guide when offering extensions to fine-haired clients:

• Use a single application, as opposed to a double application, in areas of the head where the hair is thinner (usually around the temple) to create a better blend.
• Double applications fill up a space more—so when working with fine hair, fewer double applications are necessary to fill out the head.
• If the extensions are being used for length, more packs are necessary in order to fill the hair evenly and to avoid a “shelf” look.
• In general, with fine hair, it’s more about placement than number of extensions applied. In contrast, when a client has thicker hair, more hair is needed to blend and create a natural-looking outcome.
• If a client has fine hair and wants to change up the color, offer GL Tapes! They can be fully colored for natural or fashion shades (see video below).

Coloring Tape-In Extensions

There are a few things to consider when coloring extensions to match the client’s hair—watch the in-process video above, then read what @shmeggsandbaconn suggests below:

• Color the client first—the final outcome will change depending on how the hair lifts or what previous pigment is on the strands. Then (after the client approves the color), decide how to color the extensions.
• If the end goal is fashion colors, use a light blonde shade of extensions and formulate accordingly.
• Saturation is especially important when coloring extensions—use a lot of product and really work it into the hair with a back-and-forth brush motion to avoid hollow patches or bleed marks. (See video above!)
• If the color of the extensions has been changed often using lightener to remove old pigment, the new color will fade faster.
• To care for extensions and fashion shades, tell clients to wash with cool water and to avoid conditioning the root area.
