1. The Basics: Equipment & Lighting
The goal of every hair video you shoot is simple—get a clean, clear shot that showcases the technique. Let’s start with the equipment essentials:
- A tripod
- Phone camera
- Light source
- Natural light: Close to a window.
- Ring light: Don’t get too close or too far away to the direct source.
Pro Lighting Tips:
- To avoid unwanted shadows, add additional lights or reflectors.
- Play with different lighting and body positions until you get a clear shot.
- Always flip the phone and see how the light looks on yourself before filming to prevent having to re-record if the lighting is bad.

2. Here Are A Few Examples
Social videos should be short, sweet and clearly show your hands in the hair—whether you’re sharing a tip or full tutorial. Check out a couple of IG-worthy inspo videos from @ellealiseartistry and @sarahclairehair.
Pro Tip: Instead of adding text to the video, write a detailed caption that breaks down the steps and products used. Don’t forget to tag brands and @behindthechair_com to get noticed on social.

3. Adjust The Phone’s Camera Settings
Here’s a secret for recording great quality videos with high resolution—all it takes is a few quick steps to change the settings on your phone.
First, follow this path:
Settings > Camera > Record Video
Here are two recommended settings:
- 1080p HD at 30 fps
- 4k at 30 fps (iPhone setting)
Then, open the camera and shoot! 📸
Select either one of the settings with a blue check mark below!
4. Composition: What You Need To Know
Knowing how to compose an image will instantly improve your videos. Just remember that the technique should be the focus in the center of the frame! Here’s a trick: Enable the grid feature, so you can find the perfect position and achieve balance.
What Are You Shooting For?
- Posting on Facebook, YouTube or website = Shoot landscape (horizontal)
- Posting on Instagram and Pinterest = Shoot portrait (vertical)
For Example: Check out how the braid is the focus of this video by @i_pasechnik!
