5 Sweet Summer Bridal Looks

close formula

As the seasons change, so do bridal styles. As we head into spring, the styles are beginning to shift from the ornate looks of winter, into looser, freer shapes that befit the season of light, liberation and new beginnings.

In her first column for behindthechair On Paper, BTC’s resident special occasion style expert, educator, author and social media phenomenon, from Hair & Makeup by Steph, Stephanie Brinkerhoff, identifies the five key bridal styles to master for the spring weddings that will soon appear on your books!

1. CLEAN CHIGNONS—ELEGANT WITH A TOUCH OF SOFTNESS.

overview: Curl all strands with a 1½-inch iron, directing the hair away from the face and backcombing the roots. Isolate the hair in front of the ear on the heavy side and clip away. Gather the remaining hair in a low, side ponytail just behind the ear on the heavy side. Smooth each curl with pomade, then loop and pin the hair around the elastic to create the base. Release the isolated section, direct it loosely toward the back, twist at the ear and pin the ends into the base.

TIP: For a more intricate design, work with smaller sections when creating the loops. If hair is fine, backcomb the roots, mist the backcombed portion with spray and apply heat from the blow dryer to lock in volume.

2. GENTLE UPSWEEPS—ALL THE FOCUS IS ON THE FACE!

overview: Section out the hair in front of the ears, and clip away. Create the base in back and secure. Use a ½-inch curling wand to shape the top and side sections, backcombing each one before curling roots to ends. When hair is curled and cooled, mist your finger with spray wax and run them through the hair. Gradually, and loosely, direct the front and top sections back to the base, and secure with pins.

TIP: Backcombing before curling keeps the hair crisp and intact.

3. SOFT BRAIDS—LAST SEASON’S FAVORITE IS STILL A WINNER!

overview: Curl the hair loosely with a 1½-inch curling iron. Be sure the curls are polished. Sweep the hair to one side and secure with pins on the opposite side. Create a medium sized circular section at the crown, and then create a three-strand braid, proceeding to just above the hairline. Gently pull each side of the individual braid section to loosen and enlarge the braid. Direct the braid toward the front of the head and pin it behind the ear. Create another section at the part, just behind the hairline, and form another braid. Cross the second braid over the first and pin it behind the ear, close to the first braid. Gather all the remaining hair and create a three-strand braid, directing it over the shoulder and down the side. Secure with a small, clear elastic.

TIP: Haircolor is important—highlights will add dimension and visual interest to your braids. This look is best on thick hair—if necessary, insert extensions to build heft.

4. TIMELESS CURLS—RIGHT FOR EVERY SEASON!

overview: Sweep the hair tightly over the shoulder; smooth flyaways with pomade. Pin the hair just behind the ear to secure. Curl the lengths with a 1½-inch curling iron, directing sections toward the face. When all hair is curled, backcomb the roots for volume. Without flattening the roots, gently brush through the curls with a boar bristle brush, directing the hair away from the face. Keep brushing until desired texture is achieved.

TIP: If the client’s hair is thick, use larger bobby pins to secure the side-sweep.

5. HALF UP—GENTLY CURLED WAVES, SECURED WITH A TWIST.

overview: Wind 2- to 3-inch sections around a 1½-inch curling iron. Once all strands are curled, blend with a wide-tooth comb, and use serum or pomade to tame frizz. Draw two sections from each side to the center back, twist and secure loosely with a bobby pin.

TIP: Backcomb the crown before curling to form a round shape with volume. Secure the twists loosely to avoid flattening the curls underneath.
