1. How To Get A More Even Lift
Color corrections, uneven blondes and clients with banding? This one’s for you! Here’s how Joico Brand Ambassador Larisa Love—aka @larisadoll to her 550k Instagram followers—creates an even lift without any lines of demarcation. Start here: Prep each section with Joico Defy Damage Pro-Series 1 bond-protecting color optimizer spray. “No need to mix, adjust your developer or change your formula,” says Larisa. “You will see greater and more even lift while rebuilding and strengthening hair bonds.”

Get The Technique Steps:

  • Tease each section to diffuse the line.
  • Place the foil and apply high developer on darkness.
  • Comb through the line of demarcation, then place the second foil at the line.
  • Apply lower developer to lighter strands.
  • Fold the double-stacked foils together.
  • Continue and finish with Joico Defy Damage Pro-Series 2.

2. Paint Trick For A Brighter Effect
Your client’s foils are processing—try this trick to maximize impact! “The last 5 to 10 minutes that her foils are processing, I dampen the ends and paint them,” dishes Marissa Mae Neel (@maeipaint). After rinsing, apply Joico Defy Damage Pro-Series 2 bond strengthening treatment for an increased, more even lift that retains color vibrancy.

3. Do Partial Foils More Often
Here’s the mantra for healthy blondes: smarter scheduling and sectioning! “Don’t do too much,” shares Christina Kreitel (@christinakreitel). “I only fully blonde-out my clients once or twice a year and the rest of the time I leave out the ‘dead zone’—behind their ears, under the occipital bone and going around the back of the head. This area can go untouched for 4 to 7 months before it becomes a black hole.” Instead, alternate between partial, half foil and full foil appointments for minimal damage.

4. Increase Lift On Stubborn Hair
Olivia Smalley, aka @omgartistry, dished out this OMG foil prep trick and we are obsessed! If your client has a harder time lifting, blow-dry their hair BEFORE the color service. This will heat up their hair and assist the blonding process by creating an accelerated advantage that lifts more efficiently.

5. Full Coverage Foils? Fold Like This!
For those clients who want to see brightness EVERYWHERE, there’s those long days in the salon working with back-to-back foils for full coverage blondes. Gina Bianca (@iamginabianca) recommends folding foils in a different way so you always know your last section to save time and avoid losing your spot.
