Cutting: 4 Tips To Avoid Giving Clients The Dreaded “Mom” Bob

Don’t get us wrong, moms are pretty awesome. But when your client comes in for a big chop, there’s a good chance her end goal isn’t to be #twinning with hers. Rather, she wants a shorter ‘do that is easy to manage, ultra modern and has lots of movement. Here are four tips that’ll help you avoid giving your clients the dreaded “mom” bob!

1. It’s All In The Technique
In order to create movement while avoiding a “mom” bob, Anh Co Tran (@anhcotran) of Ramirez Tran Salon uses a soft/blunt undercutting technique with medium to long layers. This will also keep the style from looking too stiff. (Click here to get an inside look at Anh’s bob-cutting technique!)

2. Over-Graduation Is A Major No-No
When taking off a lot of length at once, it can be easy to go a little cutting crazy. As you’re detailing the cut, David Anders Palmira (@cutyourhair) says to make sure you don’t over-graduate the back or over-layer the exterior of her hair. Instead, he suggests texturizing throughout and using interior slicing and channel cutting to create shape.

3. Keep The Front Longer
She asked for a modern bob, not a chic mullet, so Carolynn Judd (@styled_by_carolynn) recommends staying away from taking off too much length in the front thus leaving the back longer.

4. Teach Her How To Style It
“You can cut the most amazing bob, but if you don’t teach her how to style the haircut it could end up looking quite mom-ish,” says Carolynn. If she’s more low-maintenance, you can keep it as simple as applying a little beach spray and letting it air dry.
