close formula

Hollywood glammed-up for the 2015 Golden Globes and, as always, our eyes were peeled for the best “manes” on the red carpet. One of the most popular trends was an ode to Old Hollywood glam, with several leading ladies donning polished, wavy styles of the past. Top celebrity stylists share their how-tos for the four best retro looks of the night.

Jessica Chastain’s Twisting Side Wave

Jessica Chastain looked stunning on the red carpet with a modern twist to old Hollywood glamour. Her dress served as the inspiration for Wella Professionals Stylist Renato Campora, who combined curls with an elegant side twist.

Start with freshly washed and conditioned hair using Wella Elements Renewing Shampoo and Daily Renewing Conditioner which helps hydrate, nourish and strengthen hair.

2. Apply Wella Elastic Energy Mousse to damp hair and blow-dry using a round brush.

3. Using a 1.5-inch curling iron, curling only the bottom portion of hair to create voluminous curls.

4. Apply Wella LuxeOil Light Oil Keratin Protection Spray to the top of the head to smooth any flyaways.

5. Allow hair to cool for five minutes then lightly brush through the curls to create a loose look.

6. Apply a small amount of Wella Smooth Brilliance Shine Pomade to fingertips and smooth down the front of the hair for a sleek, shiny look.

7. Finish the look using Wella Stay Essential Finishing Spray.

Jennifer Lopez’s Voluminous Waves

Always the sex symbol, Jennifer Lopez heated up the red carpet with voluminous and sultry, cascading waves. Pureology Artistic Ambassador Sandra Joseph shares her how-to for recreating the look.

To prime and protect color-treated locks like Jen’s, mist Pureology Color Fanatic throughout damp hair.

2. Apply several pumps of Pureology Highlight Stylist Bodifying Luminator Texturizing Shine-Foam and blow-dry with a medium round brush.

3. Wrap warm hair into barrel curls and pin. Mist Pureology Colour Stylist Strengthening Control Zero Dulling Hairspray all over curls and allow to set for 15 minutes.

4. Drop curls and rack through with fingers. Backcomb the root area to create volume, then smooth the surface with a soft bristle brush.

5. Create a short center part and tuck hair behind the ears.

6. Work a small amount of Pureology Colour Stylist Piecing Sculpt High Holding Sculpting Fiber Paste through ends for shine, separation and memory.

Gina Rodriguez’s Classic Waves

After one look at the slinky, black Badgley Mischka gown chosen by Jane the Virgin star and Best Actress, Gina Rodriguez, her “mane” man—Joico Celebrity Stylist Paul Norton—knew just what to do. “The dress had such a classic, ‘old Hollywood,’ feeling,” reports Paul. “We were inspired to channel legendary stars like Rita Hayworth, Lana Turner, Ava Gardner and Jayne Mansfield. So we created romantic, shiny, classic waves that were ideal for the off-the-shoulder style of the gown.”

Have your client shampoo with Joico Color Balance Blue Shampoo and Conditioner to remove all traces of unwanted warmth from a few, previous highlights. On damp hair, apply Joico JoiWhip Firm Hold Design Foam to create a strong foundation and use a medium boar bristle brush to blow-dry the hair.

2. Once the hair is completely dry, subdivided it into three large horizontal sections and, beginning at the bottom, mist each section with Joico IronClad Thermal Protectant Spray.

3. Next, use a 1¼-inch curling iron to curl 2-inch subsections of hair, securing each one with large clips.

4. Working from bottom to top, and once you reach the top section, create a deep, glamorous side part and direct the hair away from the face.

5. Once all of the hair is curled and clipped, mist the hair with Joico JoiMist Medium Styling and Finishing Spray as it sets and cools. “Allowing the set to cool completely ensures that the curls will form properly,” Paul explains.

6. Once the hair is cool, remove the clips, and have your client rest her head on the back of a chair, so that her hair falls freely over the top of the chair. This will allow you to vigorously rake through the lengths with your fingers to blend the curls.

7. Next, apply a dime-sized amount of Joico Crème Wax Texture and Shine to the palm of your hand, emulsify and began working it into the hair, roots to ends, as you place and mold the final wave formation.  “I paid close attention to her facial structure so that every wave moved in the most flattering way possible,” Paul comments.

8. Once the waves begin taking shape to your satisfaction, insert large metal hair pins to set the wave shapes, while brushing through the opposite side with a Mason Pearson styling brush and securing the section close to the head with bobby pins.

9. Finally, remove the pins and apply the finishing touchesJoico Flip Turn Volumizing Finishing Spray to ensure long-lasting hold, and a quick application of Joico K-PAK Color Therapy Dry Oil Spray for trophy-winning shine!

Allison Williams’ Retro Bob

Allison Williams breezed down the 2015 Golden Globes red carpet wearing a stunning floor-length strapless red dress and sporting an asymmetrical bob, thanks to Wella Stylist Renato Campora. Her chic, classy look was a testament to old Hollywood glamour.

Start with freshly washed and conditioned hair using Wella Elements Renewing Shampoo and Daily Renewing Conditioner which helps hydrate, nourish and strengthen hair.

2. Prime damp hair by applying 2 to 3 pumps of Wella Velvet Amplifier to the palms of your hands and distribute evenly throughout the hair.

3. Work in Wella Elastic Energy Curl Enhancing Mousse from root to ends.

4. Next, create a deep side part and blow-dry the hair with a fine-tooth comb.

5. Take medium sections of hair, starting from the top of the head, and curl hair toward the face.

6. Using bobby pins, secure each curl flat to the head and lightly mist with Wella Spray Stay Essential Finishing Spray.

7. Once the hair has cooled, remove the pins and loosely brush out the lengths.

8. Shape the waves using Wella Stay Firm Finishing Spray and Wella Smooth Brilliance Shine Pomade to define and prevent flyaways.

9. Using bobby pins, curl the bottom of the hair up and under, and secure the hair to form the bob.

10. Finish the hair by spraying Wella Stay Firm Finishing Spray and Wella LuxeOil Light Oil Keratin Protection Spray leaving hair smooth, shiny and red carpet ready.
