3 Pre-Toning Tips To Try On Every Client

Pre-toning is a game-changing step that can cancel out yellow tones BEFORE the toning process. But, it’s also the No.1 secret to creating an even, clear canvas for platinum blondes. Here are three common mistakes to avoid and tips to pre-tone like a pro!

Mistake #1: Not Getting Enough Saturation

To avoid yellow tones on blonde clients, haircolor expert Rachel Williams (@rachelwstylist) uses Moroccanoil® Blonde Perfecting Purple Shampoo like a toner.

Pro Tip: To get a clean, even canvas before toning, apply the purple shampoo at the bowl from roots to ends. This will completely saturate the hair, pre-toning the freshly lightened strands.

Mistake #2: Skipping The Pre-Cleanse Step

Not cleansing the hair with a hydrating shampoo and conditioner will leave splotchy patches. Before pre-toning, Rachel uses the Moroccanoil® Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner, for an even product distribution, while locking in moisture.

Mistake #3: Rinsing Pre-Toner Too Quickly

Lastly, a common mistake is not letting the pre-toner sit long enough. Be sure to apply and leave on the hair for seven to ten minutes. This is essential to achieving that clean, even canvas. While waiting for the pre-toner to process, Rachel suggests using this time to prep your work area and mix your toner—genius!

Pro Tip: For even results, Rachel uses the K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask or a conditioning PH stabilizer before toning.
