As the globe enters another year living with the COVID-19 pandemic, some of Canada’s busiest cities are implementing new restrictions and salon closures. BTC has gathered the must-know info for Canadian stylists to stay safe and knowledgeable.
Use this page to find the current salon opening status of each province and territory and to find any new restrictions local governments may implement to alleviate the strain on the country’s healthcare system.

January 31 Update:
New Brunswick
Salons, barbershops and personal care businesses are open. The province has moved to “Level 2” of the COVID Alert System, which requires full proof of vaccination and limits capacity to 50 percent. For more information, click here.

Alberta
Hair salons, barbershops and other personal service businesses are open. The province does have additional public health restrictions in place due to rising COVID-19 cases. For more information, click here.

British Columbia
Personal services including hair salons, barbershops and nail salons have been opened, with restrictions, throughout the province since May 19, 2020. Enhanced restrictions include requiring clients and employees to wear face masks and limiting services where masks have to be removed. For more information, click here.

Manitoba
Hair salons, barbershops and other personal care service businesses are open. The province is currently at the “Restricted” level for COVID restrictions. For more information, click here.
New Brunswick

Newfoundland and Labrador
Hair salons and other personal care services are now open provincewide. The entire province is now in “Alert Level 4,” which allows personal care businesses to open in accordance with public health guidelines. For more information, click here.
Northwest Territories
Salons and barbershops must follow the regulations outlined in the “Occupational Health and Safety Regulations” document, found here.
Employers are also required to complete a “WSCC Workplace Risk Assessment” form and have employees complete a “WSCC Field Level Risk Assessment” form before beginning work.

Nova Scotia
Hair salons, barbershops and other personal service businesses must follow social distancing guidelines and require masks for both stylists and clients beginning December 22, 2021, which may affect capacity. Services where a client needs to remove their mask is not permitted. The new restrictions are to help curb rising COVID cases and stop the spread of the Omicron variant. Nunavut Territory
Hair salons, barbershops and other personal service businesses are open. Masks are mandatory for both stylist and client. To read more, click here.
Ontario
Hair salons, barbershops and other personal service businesses must reduce capacity to 50 percent, starting January 5, 2022 for 21 days. Other restrictions include: prohibiting walk-ins (client’s must be seen by appointment only) and any service that requires the removal of a face mask. The new restrictions are to help curb rising COVID cases and stop the spread of the Omicron variant. For more information, click here.

Prince Edward Island
Hair salons and personal service businesses are open but limited to 50 percent capacity. Temporary capacity restrictions are in place until January 31, 2022. To read more, click here.

Yukon Territory
Personal care services, including hair salons and barbershops are open. Beginning January 7, 2022 personal service businesses must reduce capacity to either 25 people or 50 percent, whichever is less. Proof of vaccination will also be required. To learn more, click here.
