skincare retail

I have a skincare therapist and she rents her space. She wants to put her retail out front and pay me a percentage of retail. What would be a fair amount to ask? She wants to only pay me 2%. I have a nic large retail area with lots of windows to see in. It would definitely be to her advantage to have it out front.

2% isn't really enough to make you much money, if she sells a thousand a week you'll get only @20.00, before tax.

Would she sell your beauty products for 2%? I wouldn't, and neither would anyone else.

Presumably she's marking everything up 100%, so a jar of cream she buys for $10.00 she sells for $20.00? She's making $10.00 and you get 40 cents? Not a very good deal for you.

Why not settle on a fixed sum for the space each week, say $40.00? That way her 'rent' for the space is covered as soon as she retails $80.00...

You might settle on $25.00 instead, the point is that you don't really want to lock yourself into a small commission and be getting very little each week for it, plus you don't really know how much she sells unless you check it out regularly...do you want to spend time going through receipts for a few dollars?

Hmm, if a stylist were asked which of the skin products to use for a given result, would the stylist get their normal percentage for retail sales? If there is a receptionist and the receptionist were asked for assistance in choosing from the skin products would there be a percentage due to the receptionist? It might be a good idea to start a conversation with the skin care therapist which draws attention to what you might be paying as commission for retail sales on hair care products. Maybe she would benefit from the assistance in skin care product sales especially while she is either not there or busy with a facial. On top of that (if she becomes open to the idea of sales help from stylists) the salon should get a commission, however the good side of it is that the salon is not spending any money stocking the skin care lines. Renting display space is another good alternative, but you might want to add a percentage of sales to it, especially if stylists might feel short changed because a client spent less on hair care products because they also purchased skin care products and the stylist only got a percentage of the hair care lines.

Then you create a bookkeeping nightmare with paperwork, petty squabbles over commissions and possible bad feelings. Besides, unless the stylists and receptionist really know about the products and understand them, then it's best that they don't sell them, because it could lead to problems for the facialist. You wouldn't want her giving hair-care reccomendations to your clients unless she knew about it would you?

Below is a classified ad from the BTC board...This salon doesn't seem to know that one does not 'hire' stylists to rent...(they seem not to have proofread their spelling either)...

Cafe Hair is now hiring professional styilists to rent.

The second paragraph, below, not only suggests that these renters are 'staff' but  appears to have a syntax problem, in fact it really doesn't make much sense.

Is anyone paying any attention here?

We believe in staying current through our education program that we have taken our staff to international hair and fashion shows.

Huh?
