layer help

I have a silly question, but I just started cutting hair and was wondering if a girl with shoulder length or longer hair came in and wanted layers starting at the bottom of her ears and down from there how would you do that or is it possible without making it look like a mess

cutting layers

This is definitley possible.  The best way to begin layering, when you are just starting to cut hair is to establish guides.  The first guide will be on top, representing how short that you want the top layer to be and the other guide will be the legnth at the bottom.  You would then take vertical sections, about 1 inch wide and match up the guides, then you cut off everything outside of the imaginary line between the two guides.   Hope I made some sense, I am a visual learner, so you should find a text book or have an instructor help you out.   Remember, everyone's hairline is different, so you should have someone show you how to do it around the face in different situations.
