question on long sideburns

I need some tips and/or advice on cutting the long sideburns these teenagers and young men have when they get a scissor cut. I've been combing the hair forward (if it's long enough) & outlining & then combing it backwards & outlining this has been working but had one yesterday still a bit fuzzy so I barely went over it w/my clipper w/a guard on it..... just want to know is there a better way??
