Hair Appliance Recommendations for Newbie

I am a makeup artist just learning to style hair. I am taking a hair styling workshop this weekend and need to get a basic kit together quickly. I don't want to invest in top-of-the-line appliances before I know if I'm even any good at styling hair! But I don't want to throw money away on cheap appliances either. I'm considering curling irons from Hot Tools, a flat iron by Hai, and blow dryers from Elchim or Hot Tools. I'd love any advice or recommendations on these brands or others! Thanks!

With the exception of the Hot Tools blow dryer you are on the mark with your choices.
