issue with new co-worker
Posted: Saturday, October 23, 2004 7:34:02 PM
a new stylist was hired last week, and there are major problems. he came from another salon saying that they were the problem and he couldn't wait to leave. and he's been out of work for one month. so now he is trying to steal all of our clients. he hangs out at the front desk and when another stylist's client comes in, he trys to talk them into seeing him instead. and he's always trying to take over the front desk, he tells the receptionist, "why don't you go in the back and relax, I'll take over for a while" , then he books himself all the clients. and there are three of us trying to build books right now, he's not taking turns with booking. when he was checking out a client, he said to the stylist "oh, that looks nice, isn't that the cut you were working on in class today?", right in front of the client! he is being really dirty and I feel like I have to watch him every second. he is making it really hard for me to come to work now. I really can't stand him. he never shuts up about the salon he used to own, and how he used to do things. like the way we do things isn't as good. I wanna say 'well if your salon was so good, then why the hell isn't it still open?' he's talking to his clients about becoming artistic director for the company, and managing the salon when the current manager leaves. he has just come in from nowhere and is trying to take over. does anyone have any suggestions? I am at my wits end about this. I really love my salon and all my clients, and he is making it very difficult for me to go to work. I worry that if he becomes manager, he will turn it into some crappy regis wannabe. thanks in advance.

TDub-where is the person who hired this guy?  this person would need to be the one who deals with him.  i'm sure the clients don't appreciate being bullied into an appointment with him.  his attitude and actions are unprofessional and the owner needs to address this problem soon.

meanwhile, continue  taking good care of your clients, educating yourself and refining your skills.  doesn't sound like he'll be around long from his track record.

If you really love your job,  don't let him traipse in there and run you out.  I agree with m2, the manager/owner should speak to him about his behavior, but I bet he will backpeddle his way out of the comment he made in front of that client. I would imagine if he became the manager, he wouldn't have any employees!

hey, thanks for the posts. I'm not really sure what will happen if he becomes manager. but I do know he's already working on it. in our company you must go thru their classes when you start, regardless of how long you've been a hairdresser. (at least that's what they told me) but he has been able to skip the classes and go right to the 'test out'. I was a hairdresser for 2 years before I started with this company. they made me go thru all the classes and then test out. I'm pretty sure it's because of all the a$$ kissing he's been doing since he started. last week he brought the instuctor (whom he'd never met) breakfast from mcdonald's. I was thinking about going to the manager and telling her that I want her position when she leaves. the owner of the company already offered me a teaching position. I am willing to do anything to keep him away from it.
