I'm sure that THIS thread falls under the catoragory for non-informative to the beauty industry at hand............

As for dealing with bad tippers....there is no way to deal with them. You deal with yourself into acceptance that it is their privilage for deciding whether to leave a tip or not.

If you are not making enough money....then it's your own fault, certainly not the clients'. You need to raise your prices to meet the demands of your bills and have some to play with or save or whatever. depending on something that is not predetermined to survive is silly and irresponsible. Take action for your own future and charge what you are worth and the tips will become just what they are meant to be: a little something extra.

We are not like waitressing- we don't have to work for $2.75 an hour because we make $100.+ in tips a day. Some of us do make $100.+ in tips a day but are also making $100.+ an hour to go with it. In a lot of cases in this profession there is no excuse for total dependance on tips. they ARE crumbs as opposed to the cake(your prices) As Robert Cromeans has mentioned.

Besides what exactly would one say to a customer? "Oh your tip stinks!" how rude.

What's your problem now...hotlocks??

Doesn't matter I guess, you just always seem to have one. It appears that you can't help yourself: Your rudeness and ignorance pervade every pore of your being so bad that you actually think it's normal the way you respond to other members postings. I have seen that you add nothing but derogatory opinions and insults in almost every thread you post on. And there is no excuse for you in typing....you can't blurt while typing. I guess you are just driven by a juvenile and low intelligence frame of mind. Still not my problem.

Advice on bad tippers
Posted: Saturday, October 30, 2004 10:39:57 AM

You have no idea why people don't tip. Could be anything, weren't brought up in or work in a tipping environment, they just don't have the money, not everyone tips and shouldn't be expected to do so. Tips are just that. Tips. Not to be confused with your income nor to be treated as such money. You aren't making money than raise your prices or turn the ticket.

Please do ignore ignorant people who only have nothing to contribute but their own ignorance.

I am greatful for tips but some people are ignorant.

Some of my clients never tip. I went to lunch with one,(sucessful real estate agent) and she left a dollar tip for the waitress. Me and my husband run a salon together with no employees and we have been asked if we get tips since we own the place and we point to the other one and say he's the owner today! I tell them yes we gladly except tips. I bring home 40-50 percent after overhead but some people are told we don't accept tips! We are service oriented so we should get tips! We get 6% on average and 20% of the people tip. We have been keeping count. I got a 25 dollar tip on a haircut yesterday yahoo!

Works in a business that's a big a rip as healthcare and that's what she leaves the waitress... hummmm maybe she fits into one of my catagories above

She must be related to my aunt. This one complained about leaving a tip for a dinner that the cook screwed up. We were comped a $300 meal that night and she's b@tching about the tip....that she didn't leave no less!

while it may SEEM (to some) that this thread is "non-informative to the beauty industry at hand............" I feel it is very pertinent to our industry especially the newbies. While us veterans may feel it's a moot point, it's really important for the up and comings to see how us old timers feel and deal with EVERY aspect of the industry. It would be nice, however, if we remained professionals when responding.

But evidently some of us don't feel that it's a moot issue because they complain that clients who don't tip "suck!" Could you imagine clients reading this crap and assuming that those nice words come out of their stylist mouth....who THEY pay and keep THEM employed in the first place... and are now saying about them?

hairchic, you missed the point of my post...

this thread was just a bunch of insults and silly juvenile comments about how one feels about "bad tippers".

THAT is what was not pertinent to the beauty industry at hand.

I answered the inquiry without slings about people who don't tip or tip little. Who are we to decide what's little or a "bad" tip when we are not entitled to tips as part of our salaries?

This is something some people choose to do as an extra to show appreciation. It is entirely up to the client to do this or not. therefore in this industry there is no such thing as a bad tipper. Does anyone notice that when you become the owner a lot of your faithful tippers stop tipping you?

sorry alesia I thought this was the original thread on how we feel about tipping in general. There was genuine discussion on that one. I scrolled to the bottom and realized it was just a bunch of slander occurring as you pointed out.
sorry :-)

although tipping is up to the client, we offer tip envelopes at the desk where clients check out, prominently displayed with pens in a little box. next to that is a place to put them once they are done. the person checking the client out usually asks if they need their change broken down into smaller bills, to kind of remind them that not only did they have a stylist, but there is also a shampoo assistant that should be tipped.

even though we don't allow tips to be put on credit cards or checks, everyone gets tipped.

other than making it obvious that it is something to be done at check out, i don't think openly telling the client you expect a tip is proper.

The best way around tips is to never rely on them. Yes, I mean never pay a utility bill, your rent, or provide for your children with tip income.

First of all, I'm very grateful to be making fantastic money but when I relocated I quickly realized my clients from a previous salon were now tipping half a dozen people instead of just me an an assistant. I even had a complaint or two about it.

A tip isn't an automatic thing. Also, if the tab is pushing $300 or more, it's just not reasonable to expect a client to match it with a tip.

Clients also base the tip WITHOUT the tax amount, so if you think they're being cheap, why on earth should they be tipping you on top of the tax amount??

Use your tips to buy lunch, shop for yourself, or to treat someone. I never look in the envelopes until the end of the day because I'd rather have a favorable view of the client for their next visit.

If you are relying heavily on tips for the above, you need to reign in your budget, or strive to get a better paying job!
