You do not have to use the curved scissors to get a similar result. All you have to do when using a straight scissor is move the scissor to cut a curved shape. The curved scissors help get a stronger separation in the ends, but not that much more than a straight blade cutting a curved. Mostly good for "cool factor".
The scissors that I use are Hakucho. They are a cheaper line, I don't think that you need to spend a lot of money on a really nice curved scissor when you are cutting a textured shape. I think that I paid $100 for them from B.W. Boyd. You can probably get them from ShearWorld as well.
