Color classes?
Posted: Tuesday, February 05, 2013 9:20:43 PM
I have been a hairstylist for over 7 years working in a salon that is pretty much just cuts. I would like to move on but I am not sure how. I can't be hired at a salon taking walk ins if I am not familiar with color. I am currently working Mondays which is when most of the local classes (salon concepts, salon centric) seem to be held. Does anyone know of any other places to take classes or any other ways that I may be able to play catch up a little so that I am able to move on somewhat? Thank you

Colour Line

Depending on what color line you use, you probably can get a free class with the company. Usually they will send a technician to you at your convenience or you may be able to attend a cluster class that isn't on a Monday.
Contact your sales rep and explain the situation. As a color technician, I know they want to make sure stylists are knowledgeable about their color and how to get great results every time.

You can also try Cosmoprof or other salon supply stores. They often have extra copies of haircolor technical manuals. You might be able to get one or two of them and read about the color wheel, the law of color, the level system, and mixing instructions for several lines.

My current salon does not have a color line. It is cuts only. I do have some books about color. But without actual hands on experience most salons can't hire me.

Trade show season is coming up and since they are usually 2-days, it is the perfect time to Look for a Sunday hands-on class.

Otherwise, check with various manufacturers for educational dvds. Most of them have videos explaining their color lines...

I am confused. Why can't salons hire you if you don't have experience? In my experience, most don't care and are willing to train. You have your license, you can do hair, and they will show you how if you need help at first. Also, you can always experiment on dolls and friends to build up your confidence and skills while you wait to find another salon.

A few places I've applied said they would love to train me but they don't have the time. Their need was someone to walk in and be ready to take whatever customer comes thru the door. Jcpenney was willing to train but I had to be an "associate stylist" for 6-12 months which is pretty much a receptionist. If walk ins came in i could do them but I was being trained for the desk first..not on color etc. So that would limit the walk ins I could take.

I just reread this thread, and if you tell potential employers you want Mondays off, they will probably work around you, especially if they aren't willing to train. You can just say, "I really need color education and I really want to move forward in my career, but no one wants to train me. If I have to spend the time and money to educate myself, then I need the concession to do it." It's a respectable reason that many will work around.
