cleaning responsiblities

can you help me with what is the norm on expectations of booth renters helping to clean common areas.  For example, in the winter there is a ton of salt being dragged into the salon and renters are asked to vacuum rugs and just sweep up the common areas to keep salt off of floor.

In a rental situation, it is "normal" to expect that all renters will chip in and keep the common areas clean. Unfortunately, many people think it is always "someone elses" responsibility to keep the place clean. I would write this into the rental agreement, what the expectations are, and that way it can be enforced. I would also have a meeting with all of the renters and let them know in no uncertain terms, what you expect, and what needs to be done.

I don't understand this attitude. Nobody has ever had to tell me to help clean. I hate the idea of my clients seeing an unkempt salon.

The "norm" is that everybody either chips in to clean, or chips in to hire a cleaning person. Decide if you have more time or more money and take care of it.
