Career Advice...Please
Posted: Wednesday, December 12, 2012 11:01:26 PM

Looking for other avenues in the industry..I have been in the businesses for 25yrs and counting, but I am at a point where I just dont think I can do it anymore.  I have been self-employed for most of those 25yrs, I have educated for a few major brands. and am now instructing at a beauty school ( for the 2nd time).  The first time I worked for a college, I did it only for a yr, wen tback to the salon because I missed it.  Now, I have gon e back to teach because my body cannot withstand the long hours of working behind the chair.  However, because I am older now..old enough to be thses students mother...I find that I do not get the respect.  Plus there are some other issues with the management of the school.  I just don't feel it is my calling.  I'm just wondering what else can I do, that would also give me a descent income. I have been thinking of going back to school to get my esthetician license, that would open up some doors in the skin care/dermatology field...any input or advice from anyone I would greatly appreciate.

Hi

There's plenty of things you can do! I've been doing hair 20 years myself, and had plenty of challenges and gotten burnt out. You might consider working in the theater, doing commercial work if your styling ability is good, or specialize.

I'd also tell you you gotta spend 30 minutes a day doing some sort of fitness program, (even if it's just a long walk and stretching) if you want to stay in this business! LOL

Ten years ago, I had a carpal tunnel scare, and realized my days of power blow-drys were limited. I also knew that 80% of my work was color, so I became a colorist, with the eventual goal of never having to do a blow-dry. I actually reconsidered a job with famous celebrity hairdresser because she insisted I would have to start doing blow-drys again, LOL

Here's the thing. You can't "sit" around waiting for the perfect job. That's not how the universe works. Sit down every day and write in a journal, and do some creative visualization about what your perfect job would be. If you are unsure, the universe is unsure what to deliver to you-

Write down in a smooth, concise present tense paragraph exactly what you want your life to look like.

Then, in every day, in every way, you take the time to find the opening. It's there, in the people you deal with every day, opportunity waits. You might have to do a little legwork, but the key is to explore the people you deal with every day at a deeper level- one more question, AND express your dream if it's ok to to as many people as possible and it WILL happen.

You just have to inspire yourself to know exactly what you want first.

great advice russ, i will add that suda66 needs some inspiration, teaching can be the pits! take a hands on class, or go to hairbrained.me for some great ideas of how to think of your craft and stop focusing on the job aspect, try to focus on the creative aspect.it definitely sounds like you are burnt out right now. i have 30 years under my belt and get that way some times too. you might want to align yourself with a product company and be an educator for them, go to all of the companies you like and scroll down to careers, then submit your resume. with your education background and years of exp, you may land a regional gig.

As you can see not done this before ..I just feel like sometimes I could do with other people that are in my shoes to see what they think.some times i feel like am I being over sensitive or are people just walking over me.. I have been hairdressing for 18 years .ive been in my latest salon for eight years .i worked up to senior stylist then managed it for a year.then I had the chance to buy it and have owned it now for a year. I'm finding it very hard from going from friend to salon owner. Especially in a rent a chair salon. As I know you need to show leadership and I tried to bring in a computer system and make a couple of changes. But know one really wants changes I can't make them do it there self employed. So I'm given in and going back the way it was because its been so stress full worrying if the computer will break and no ones using it properly .its a wast of money.i feel like the salons lost its mojo and not sure how to motivate myself and team.....please help

Take a look at some of the beauty schools in Inglewood (http://www.marinello.com/beauty-schools/southern-california/inglewood.aspx). You might find something that interests you. But really, give a serious thought to what you want first. What are you interested in? What makes you happy? What do you think you can do long-term? Think about it.
