! Help! How did you tell your current salon owner you were leaving to open your own salon?

I'm a new salon owner about to sign my lease this week. I'm so nervous to tell the of the salon I booth rent from that I'm leaving to start my own salon. I also wanted to know any advice you have for me as a new owner. I have been a hairstylist for over 12 years and have a large clientele. I'm opening up a high end 6 chair salon. I want to have a few booth renters and maybe 1 or 2 commission stylist. I love davines and plan to carry their line as well as a new one from Europe called Evo. Just tried it and am pretty impressed. Any advice you can give would be so helpful:)

What are you nervous about?

You are relocating your business. No different than if you rented a storefront and are moving. Time to sign a new lease? Nope, I'm relocating. I've already signed another lease.

There is nothing you should be nervous or scared about. If you are truly a booth renter, your time there can end at anytime, and your current 'landlord' should know and expect that.

It's a business decision that really shouldn't involve your current landlord.

Just dont be a salon jumper like someone that ditches out on a rental house. Waiting untill the end of your current contract is fine. But if you are in the middle of a contract and you give notice the saturday before the monday you open your own shop and walk out -  that is totally wrong. Tell the salon owner at least a month ahead of time in you still are in contract and they should understand and be greatful for the heads up and can find another stylist to take your place. In this business you want to remain on friendly terms with as many stylist as you can. You never know when you may need them again.

Why should she tell the landlord a month ahead of time? In my experience a lot of salon owners will kick a booth renter out anyway. It's the rental version of pushing someone out before her clients find out she's gone.

I would not let on until you're ready to move. Make sure you get addresses and phone numbers for all your clients. Slip all the announcements cards when you can. Two weeks before you open, give notice at your current salon. In fact, book out those two weeks on "vacation" so you don't miss anyone. I think two weeks is far, and if your owner does go the immature route, you miss nothing and have time to finish up details before your opening. Best of Luck to you!

Be ready to leave when you tell them. Be prepared. Get all the info on your clients and be ready to contact them.  It will be up to them wheather they stay or come with you. I would say it in a letter if you can't tell them in person.

I would tell them that i'd saved enough money and ready to be on my own. They would understand because they'd been in that situation before. Don't lie or don't something that will destroy your relationship. Honesty goes a long way!
