Posted: Saturday, October 31, 2009 10:12:07 PM
Yes I  have a salon outside of a small town, the owner build this building for me and i pay rent been there going on 6 years. ITS have been great untill now I have a nail tect and the landlord told me to tell her that she could not do some people in the salon[ I AM IN THE SOUTH] i do not feel the same why as the landlord plus i do not feel like she should tell me what kind of clients i can do in the salon since i pay rent . This has lost the nail tec alot of money and me also , the nail tec is going to a new salon by the way the nail tec is my twin sister. I have one stylist that rents from me also in the salon.NO CONTRACT WITH LANDLORD . what should i do.?

that is a tough thing to tell anyone how to handle. you are losing clients, and a technician because your landlord is a racist. you can fight for your rights, or move out.you can continue to serve the community, against this person's will, and let him try to find another tennant that will follow his ways, or turn people away and appear as though you are discriminating, instead of him.one way is a fight for civil rights, the other is avoidance. i can't tell you which is better or easier. your call. a real hot button subject.i wish you luck.

I would go ahead and take any clients that you can do regardless of race and in the mean time look for  better location near by. if you continue to stay in that location under that landlord then you will be the one that would look like  a racist and not the landlord. and when you move tell the landlord why you are choosing to move and hopefully he will see that his own biggetry has cost him a loss of money and maybe he will change his ways in the future.

Get educated with where you stand legally quickly.

Hmm... Spend a few bucks and talk to a lawyer about these unlawful restrictions that have been placed upon you. I think you might have some options here.

Another thought...

Another thought came to mind... if you are refusing service to minorities, you probably are violating the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The consequences are harsh if someone were to retaliate legally for you refusing to serve them. And it won't matter that your landlord told you not to serve them. I think you will have to take a stand or move. Consult a lawyer about how to deal with this.

landlords often try to circumvent the law...

go to the nearest Legal Aid of (your state) and pick up a copy of the law or visit www.findlaw.com and print the appropriate parts for your situation.  Give this to your landlord and be prepared to move if standing your ground doesn't work.  Good luck!
