Celebrity Copy Cuts: Tegan and Sara

Indie style alert! Canadian alt rocker duo (and twins) Tegan and Sara share more than incredible musical talent—the sisters are also sporting the most talked-about haircut in the music industry! Since their debut in the mid ’90s, they’ve rocked everything from blunt bowls to Joan Jett mullets, but this latest look is their best yet. The TIGI team was on-hand to style hair at the South by Southwest Music Festival recently (where Tegan and Sara performed), so we asked TIGI Learning Lab Creative Director Mitchel Wilson to provide a technical breakdown of their cool coif. Here’s how he’d do it.

HOW-TO STEPS

  • close formula
    1

Shampoo and condition with TIGI Bed Head Urban Antidote Recovery and apply TIGI Bed Head Control Freak Serum as a cutting lotion. Create a curved diagonal back parting from the low recession area to just below the crown on both sides. At the front hairline, elevate diagonal back sections to 90 degrees and point cut. Decrease the length as you progress.

Subdivide each section and repeat, working to the center back of the head. Cross check after every three sections for accuracy.

    3

Repeat on the opposite side. If your lengths are balanced, your sections will blend perfectly. As you work, adjust your hand and body position to complement the sectioning and head shape.

    4

Isolate the bottom area. Release the top and divide the hair with a radial parting from ear to ear. Create a central vertical section that extends from the crown, elevate to 90 degrees, disconnect the top lengths from the bottom section by 1 to 2 inches, and slice the section round to the head shape.

    5

In pivoting sections, work from the center to the ear, following the guide and slicing round to the head shape. Position yourself on the same side as your guide.

    6

Extend the central vertical guide section from the back through to the front hairline, elevate to 90 degrees, over direct and slice visually from short-to-long.

    7

Subdivide the guideline into two sections. Create diagonal forward sections from the central vertical guideline to the outside edge, distribute back to 90 degrees from the round of the head shape and slice the hair, following the guide. Over directing back to 90 degrees from the round of the head shape (parietal ridge) will preserve weight through the top area while maintaining the corner.

Cross check and then begin personalizing and texturizing with channel cutting and deep parallel point cutting. Remember that short hair supports and lifts long hair, so any time you are removing weight, keep in mind that the shorter hair will impact the longer strands.

Apply TIGI Bed Head Candy Fixations Totally Baked. Blow-dry using a TIGI Pro Blow-Dryer and a TIGI Pro Small Cushion Brush. “The versatility of this cut allows you to shape it in a multitude of styles,” says Mitchel, “such as side-swept with texture, slicked back with a pomp or with a sleek, tuxedo side part for a posh effect.” For a playful, textured finish, sprinkle TIGI Bed Head Candy Fixations Sugar Dust at the roots and work Hard to Get Pliable Wax through the lengths.
