  Section the hair. Beginning at the center back, take vertical subsections and cut a graduated guide that follows the natural curve of the head. Leave a small amount of length around the hairline to create a soft perimeter. Continue in this manner to a point just below the ear. Create diagonal subsections, overdirecting each to the previous section. Continue in this manner to the front hairline. Repeat on the opposite side.

  Begin the top section at the front hairline, and work from the sides toward the center of the head. Take diagonal subsections as illustrated and cut the first with low elevation. As work progresses toward the center, use progressively longer strokes, and overdirect each subsection to the previous section. Elevate subsections as work progresses toward the center back. Repeat on the opposite side. Texturize to remove bulk. Blow-dry, and refine the haircut as needed.

  For a sleek pixie, prep the hair with Aveda Pure Abundance Style-Prep. Apply Aveda Volumizing Tonic and perform a wrap-dry using a blow dryer with a nozzle attachment and your hands, working the hair from side to side. When nearly dry, move the hair from side to side using a fine-tooth comb until 100 percent dry. Emulsify two drops of Aveda Dry Remedy Daily Moisturizing Oil, and apply to ends. Using a fine-tooth comb, sculpt the hair around the hairline into the desired shape. Apply Aveda Air Control Hair Spray for hold as needed.

  Prep the hair with Aveda Pure Abundance Style-Prep. Apply Aveda Volumizing Tonic and set the longer top sections in pin curls to create volume and texture.

  When 100 percent dry, remove the pins. Take small sections at random, clamp the hair in a flat iron and rotate in a C-shape to bend the hair into a curl. Continue until all the hair is curled. Emulsify Aveda Light Elements Texturizing Crème and work through hair to achieve the desired texture.
