Head-Gehog from Saco
Extreme color. Taken to extreme measures. Eight thousand plain wooden toothpicks. Each one handpainted one of six shades. Diluted gouache paint allows he veins of the wood to show, creating dynamic dimension. Each toothpick hand glued individually, section by section, following a predetermined, graphic haircut shape on a headform. Each finished shape carefully positioned and puttied into place on a model. Touched up with a glue gun. Painstakingly lit and photographed. Five shapes. Five hundred hours of work. Handcrafting, taken to a new realm. Extremely imaginative. Extremely inspiring.
