Garren is Named as 3rd Judge for RAW
BTC's All New, Live-Judging Hair Show Competition
Sunday Night, June 3rd at Premiere Orlando

It’s official! We can now announce the third judge who will round out our RAW judging panel. RAW is a brand new event from behindthechair.com, and it’s all about discovering new talent — raw talent. RAW places the spotlight on young teams under the age of 30 who will compete in a live judging competition for the best produced hair show. It takes place Sunday, June 3 at Premiere Orlando.

So are you ready? Take a deep breath--we’ve just confirmed that the one, the only GARREN, world famous session artist and owner of Garren New York — will join the RAW judging team.

Styling celebrities like Madonna, Scarlett Johansson, Sandra Bullock, Lea Michele, Amanda Seyfried and the late Audrey Hepburn; responsible for Oprah’s first Vogue cover and Victoria Beckham’s headline-making gamine crop transformation in 2008; working with photographers like Steven Meisel, Steven Klein, Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, David Sims and the late Irving Penn and Richard Avedon; models like Gisele, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista and more recently, Karlie Kloss, Karen Elson, Lara Stone and Jessica Stam; designers like Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, Christian Dior, Anna Sui, Calvin Klein and Louis Vuitton; and beauty companies like Cle de Peau, YSL, Cover Girl and Revlon, Garren plays a key role in the world’s foremost fashion, commercial and editorial collaborations. In his eponymous salon on Fifth Avenue, he caters to a client roster of magazine editors, leading photographers, designers, celebrities and supermodels that represent a “who's who” of the fashion, music and film worlds. His magazine covers for Vogue, Italian Vogue, Allure, Vanity Fair, etc., number in the thousands. Garren’s “Behind the Cover” column for behindthechair On Paper, along with his regular updates for behindthechair.com, provide BTC members with exclusive, up-to-the-minute trend reports direct from his high-profile fashion and editorial assignments. He also regularly shares exclusive, in-depth technical information on how to get the looks he creates on set. Most recently he reported from the set of his Interview cover shoot with Katy Perry, revealing the exclusive details of the shoot creative brief and the techniques he used to create the pop star’s stunning and unexpected styles. With his deep understanding of the collaborative nature of fashion production, Garren will bring an exciting level of expertise…and his own very high personal expectations…to the RAW judging process. What’s more, this will be the first chance for BTC members to actually meet this beauty and fashion icon in person. “I’m thrilled to be a part of RAW and look forward to being able to judge all of the young new talent. FYI — if it wasn’t for a hair competition when I was 20 years old, and won first prize, I probably would not have been able to transfer to New York City and become who I am today!” he shared.

Garren will join Ken Paves and Ellen Rakieten on the RAW judging panel for this first time event. Competitors will actually receive live critiques immediately after their presentations from this esteemed group of experts.

Ken Paves is one of Hollywood's most celebrated celebrity stylists, whose client roster includes Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson and Lady Gaga. He has also worked on covers for Vogue, Marie Claire, Elle, Harper's Bazaar, and Allure. Ken is the creator of "Hairdo" Clip-in Extensions and has most recently served as The X-Factor Hair Department Head. When I asked Ken to judge, he jumped ten feet in the air! He says, "We have such great talent on stage, but it's the same talent we've all seen for years. I want to see young, fresh talent take the stage and thanks to RAW, we will!"

Ellen Rakieten is a 13-time Emmy Award winning producer for The Oprah Winfrey Show. She elevated Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz to celebrity status, and is currently working on a number of new television projects. Ellen is excited about judging and says she has been looking for a TV show like this for a long time, "I want to be a part of something that shows the talent of hairdressers, and not the backstabbing types of TV shows we've seen in recent years,” she says. “This is a great opportunity for us to celebrate hairdressers' talent and to entertain at the same time! I really believe this concept could be a TV show and I look forward to being a part of this exciting event!"
