To: The Hair Industry

If I’m writing a love letter to anyone, it’d have to go to the industry itself! The experiences that I have had simply because I “do hair” have filled volumes of my life! I would have to send a letter to every wonderful, crazy person who I have met on the journey. It’s been a blast and I am only just beginning a new chapter!

Dear Youselie,

I have so much to thank you for. Since the first day I worked with you, I have always looked up to you. I admire your confidence and willingness to always try new things. Watching you work in the salon is such a beautiful thing, and believe me, I’m still watching! You have taught me so much and I’m sure 90% of the time you didn’t even know you were teaching me! Most people, when handed the same set of obstacles you’ve had in your life, wouldn’t come to work with a smile on their face every day. I am constantly in awe of your positive attitude. I envy the way you never hold a grudge, never let your past get in the way of your future and never let anything bring you down! I know you’ve considered me your “cheerleader” for a few years now, but I want you to know I feel like you’re mine! We’ve always gone to each other for advice when it comes to both the big and small stuff, and we still do, even though we hardly work together anymore. You have inspired me to become the best at what I do and to never say, “I can’t do that.” That confidence is the best gift anyone could ever give me.

To my first boss,

You were the owner of Cutting Performance in East Meadow, New York. It was the first salon I worked for, and you were a terrific boss. I also worked with some excellent hairdressers who taught me so much and gave me inspiration to use my talent and to not to be afraid of trying new techniques! Thanks.

Dear Farouk,

Thank you for your inspiration. I have grown with your products and still cannot believe that something that doesn’t have ammonia can do such great things. I have taken someone with extremely damaged hair and have made it look incredible, even better than it looked before it was colored, thanks to your products. You have touched my soul with your great inspiration and passion for us as stylists.

Dear Eric Fisher,

I love the books you’ve written, which I think describe a great model of how a salon should be structured. Anyone who follows your model will not fail. Thanks, Eric, I hope my salons become as great as yours.

Dear Vidal Sassoon,

I consider you to be a forward-thinking, true artist. You developed modern haircutting as we know it because you thought “outside the “box,” which I admire. You’re a visionary, and that’s how I see myself.

To my instructors at TONI&GUY,

You all have helped me learn and grow as a professional and have inspired me to be the best. You have the tools and knowledge to help me with any situation and I can confide in each of you with confidence. I am eager to learn all that I can possibly learn while at the academy and I can’t wait to make the transition to a bustling salon and become a successful hairdresser with a very pleased clientele.

To all involved in my education at the E.O.C in Troy, NY,

I would like to say thank you for your help in giving me the opportunity to do what I love to do. Because I was a single mom with three children, and I didn’t have enough money to pay for my kit, but you made sure I had one. You also recommended me for my first job in Latham, NY. To this day, I still have a couple dozen of those clients after thirty years in this wonderful profession. Thank you Rose, Mrs. Haith, and Mrs. Dee.
