Life Lessons

One time when I was an assistant, I was about to leave for vacation. I had an hour left to go and was rinsing out a perm for the woman I was a personal assistant to. I was so excited for vacation that I forgot to neutralize a whole section. After re-perming and neutralizing the hair, my mentor took me out back and told me, “Vacation starts at 10, not 9!” This was one of the biggest lessons I learned—not to be distracted and always be professional. Thank you, Sheri Cowan at Calista Grand in West Chester, PA for being the best mentor a young stylist could have. You have truly made a difference in my career. I hope I have made you proud!

Dear Kelly Cardenas,

I have been a stylist for nearly 12 years, and have had the pleasure of seeing so many icons in this industry do what they do best. Out of them all, there has been one individual who has opened my eyes more than any other, and that stylist is you. You have accomplished so much, and yet will still make time for whomever seeks you out. When the time came that I needed advice, someone who could relate to my situation, I looked to you. You took the time to not only listen but also give me the counsel I needed. It was something that I will never forget and will always be grateful for. To me it is the testament of what a mentor truly is—someone who lives by the example that they set. I honestly believe you will continue to inspire many in the future and will bring our industry to a new level through your talent, experience, and compassion.

Dear Oscar James,

Thanks for inspiring me to be one of the greatest hairdressers on Earth. Your humble spirit and remarkable talents have really shined through and showed me what it means to be a phenomenal hairstylist, not just artistically, but spiritually as well. Your work is always elegantly classic, but I also look up to you because we are from the same state of South Carolina and to me, that’s a remarkable thing. I love you dearly and hope that you are continuously blessed. With sincere gratitude and warm regards,

Dear Martin Parsons,

Your work, passion and education has always inspired me to excel, push myself to new heights and never settle for less than excellence! I have followed you from your cutting skills in the earlier years to your world-renown hairdressing techniques! I had the privilege to spend two different weeks working with you in Toronto and can honestly say you recharged my batteries for generations to come! In addition, you are so approachable and humble, and your kindness made me realize why I’m in this field. What an honor to be part of the best career in the world!! I love my profession EVERY DAY of MY LIFE! Thank you!!

To TIGI’s Creative Design Team,

Although my salon does not carry TIGI products, I use your products at my home and recommend them to clients outside of the salon. Every collection of cuts and styles you come up with has inspired me to step outside the box and use my creativity with every client in some way, shape or form. I would love the opportunity to work with you and train under you. One of my personal goals (I set them a few months after I graduated cosmo school), is to work at TIGI on the design team. AND I WILL… I love TIGI and thank you for inspiring me and keeping me focused and passionate!!

Dear Mary Ann,

You were my first employer. You’re not around anymore to see how your training helped me flourish into the hairdresser that I am today. I started out at age 16, when you took me under your wings. I remember hating those days when all I did was shampoos and sets and assisted you with your clients. Then you put me on the floor and allowed me to be me, and even though I was allowed to use my own ideas and techniques, I found everything I did came from your guidance. Here I am 35 years later, and when I train a newbie from school or do a client in my chair, I smile because your knowledge has led me this far: I’m now a professional, personalized, artistic and independent hairstylist and salon owner. Thank you, Mary Ann.

Dear Sam Villa,

Thank you so much for being with Redken and teaching the most unique haircutting techniques that I have learned in the past 20 years. Your enthusiasm is contagious and I want to someday be able to be the same with my own associates, who I am training to be the best. Your new website, DVDs and tools are the some of the best out there and I will be glad to try anything you have to offer us as salon professionals. I am very proud of you and have shared my experience at the Redken Exchange with my clients, and they too know who you are and what a fan I am of you! Go Sam and I hope to see you in person again at the Exchange.
